President Obama and Jay Leno Vie for Laughs at White House Dinner

Jay Leno had a rough couple of months over the Winter, when the general public became so weary of hearing about his moving time slot and his war with Conan O’Brien that he may have lost what little credibility he had left. Over the weekend, however, he was "out-comedianed" by the president of the United States. At the White House Correspondents dinner this weekend, Leno delivered the jokes as expected, but it was the president who truly lit it up and received praise from writers of all sorts.

Judd Apatow, director of "Knocked Up" and other comedies, noted, "I’m sure they gave the President twice as many jokes. I think a lot of the success had to do with the ones the president chose. His taste is impeccable. He also let himself be funny. Most of the time the job demands that he hold back." Another guest noted, "Jay wasn’t bad. The video bits were nice. But he was reading from notecards. The gags didn’t fly." Scarlett Johansson said simply of Obama, "His timing was impeccable."

The guest list at the dinner read like a veritable who’s who of celebrities and stars, with Tracy Morgan looked like a starstruck child himself, even as the daughters of Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown gravitated to Morgan himself. Given the opportunity to meet the president, Morgan noted in awe, "I can’t believe I met the president." Others in attendance at the dinner included Ashley Judd, Kim Kardashian, Ewan McGregor, Bradly Cooper, Morgan Freeman, Tony Romo, Jimmy Fallon and many others too numerous to mention.
